Discussion:
[Thunar-dev] Bug 6050: thunar-volman shows up in non-XFCE menu

Hello devs,

some time ago I opened the bug 6050
(https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6050) which was discussed
controversially, then closed. Harald Judt asked me to discuss the topic
on the mailing list, so that a wider audience participates the
discussion. I hope that this is the correct list :)

Here is my original request:

The thunar-volman "Removable Drives and Media" shows up in the GNOME
settings menu, and possibly in others, too (KDE? LXDE?).

However, this is a thunar bug: in the
file /usr/share/applications/thunar-volman-settings.desktop, the line
OnlyShowIn=XFCE;
should be added to indicate that this is a XFCE-specific item.

The arguments so far were:
- Why would anyone install thunar-volman without thunar on a DE that
has a filemanager and very likely a volman too?
- When multiple users are sharing the same computer, multiple DE
might be installed. The thunar-settings should not show up in the
"wrong" DE, then.
- The thunar-setting is named "Removable Drives and Media" in the menu,
which is very similar to the equivalent GNOME-settings, for example.
This can be very confusing to users.

So let the discussion begin :-)

Kind regards, Tanjeff

Thunar is part of the Xfce core, but is not limited to the Xfce desktop.
The Xfce desktop is modular in a way you can replace parts with 3rd-party
components or use parts of xfce in other desktops.
I know a fair amount of users who use Thunar outside the Xfce desktop.
I think it is worse to not show when you want it, as to the otherway around.
Meaning I don't want OnlyShowIn.

This can be very confusing to users.
If there are desktops which also provide this and do not have the modular
design or just install everything be default, we could add exceptions for
them.
Adding NotShowIn=GNOME for example.
This list should be taken with care, as we don't know how the user wants to
Thunar+volman and in which DE they use it.
If the users installed multiple DE it might just be up to the user to add
these lines.

By the way: I just noticed that the file thunar-volman-settings.desktop
is installed in /usr/share/gnome/applications/ (debian jessie), which
confuses me... maybe it is a debian packaging problem?

exceptions for them.
Adding NotShowIn=GNOME for example.
I would also include KDE, cinnamon, mate and enlightenment (they all
provide their own file managers). Does LXDE have an own file manager?
To me it is a users choice which file manager he/she wants to use in a
desktop environment.
And if we are adding all to NotShowIn there is no different to OnlyShowIn.
Unless we say thunar-volman (not thunar) is xfce specific (in case
thunar can work together with other desktop volman), I don't think we
should add these lines from Xfce. And let either the user or distro do
this.
Would be good to have some input of others on this matter.

I assume this is debian packaging. As it installed to
$(datadir)/applications/thunar-volman-settings.desktop
